ARMWOOD HIGH SCHOOL HAWK BAND & GUARD

The Standard:

I have high standards for all students in our program and any staff members, guest or volunteers we have come out to work with our students including myself. We are guided by two major standards:

  • Be the best that YOU can be.

What does that look like?

Always strive for personal growth, improvement, and excellence in all that you do.

  • Hold YOURSELF accountable.

What does that look like?
Take responsibility for your actions, preparation, effort, and commitment to the ensemble.

When every student commits to these standards, our program continues to grow stronger and more successful together.

The Expectation: Student Ownership and Responsibility:

Our band and color guard program is built on a standard of excellence, commitment, and personal responsibility. Every student is expected to take ownership of their education, their performance, and their role within the program. Being a member of this organization means understanding that success comes from preparation, accountability, and a willingness to grow.

Ownership of Education and Participation:

Students are expected to take an active role in their learning and development. This includes following all district, school, and program rules, policies, and expectations. Band and color guard are performance-based classes that require dedication both during and outside of class time. Students must be committed to their individual growth in order for the ensemble to be successful.

Taking ownership means:

  • Being present, on time, and prepared for all rehearsals, classes, performances, and required events
  • Demonstrating respectful and responsible behavior at all times
  • Representing the program, school, and community with pride and professionalism
  • Following directions from directors, staff, and student leaders

Preparedness and Materials:

Students must come to every class and rehearsal fully prepared with all necessary materials and supplies. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Instrument or guard equipment
  • Music, drill, or choreography
  • Pencil and required classroom materials
  • Proper rehearsal or performance attire

Failure to bring required materials limits both individual progress and the success of the entire ensemble. Preparation is a daily expectation and a key component of student success.

Responsibility for Learning:

Students are responsible for learning and mastering their music, choreography, concepts, and skills. Class and rehearsal time alone are not enough to achieve excellence. Students must spend time outside of class practicing, reviewing, and preparing in order to meet performance standards.

Responsibility for learning includes:

  • Practicing regularly outside of class
  • Memorizing music, choreography, and required performance elements by assigned deadlines
  • Being mentally engaged and focused during rehearsals
  • Accepting feedback and applying corrections
  • Striving for continuous improvement and excellence

Each student plays an essential role in the ensemble. When one student is unprepared, it impacts the entire group.

Self-Advocacy and Growth:

An important part of taking ownership is learning to advocate for yourself. Students are encouraged to:

  • Ask questions when they do not understand
  • Seek extra help during available tutoring, sectionals, or office hours
  • Communicate with directors or staff about concerns or challenges
  • Request additional challenges when ready to grow beyond current expectations

We are committed to helping every student succeed, but students must take the initiative to seek support and communicate their needs.

Commitment to Excellence:

Our program operates under two guiding principles:
Be the best that YOU can be.
Hold YOURSELF accountable.

When students take ownership of their responsibilities, they not only improve individually but also strengthen the entire band and color guard family. Excellence is achieved when every member commits to preparation, accountability, and continuous growth.

What is Tri-M?

  • The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy.
  • Tri-M is the only music honor society for junior/middle school and high school students in United States.
  • Tri-M recognizes students that have gone above and beyond both academically and musically.
  • Tri-M also provides students leadership opportunities to make a difference in their community through music-based service projects.
  • There are more than 2,100 chapters across 50 states and 15 countries.
  • Tri-M involves more than 84,000 students in grades 6-12.
  • Each year, student members contribute more than 750,000 service hours to their school and local communities and raise nearly $1 million for causes they care about.

What are the requirements for membership?

  • Candidates must be a member of those classes designated as eligible by the local chapter.
  • Candidates must have been in attendance at the school for the equivalent of one semester.

Membership Requirements:

Tri-M member consideration should not be limited to any one segment of a music program (such as band, chorus, etc.). The following criteria may be included at the discretion of the

Chapter Advisor:

  • Music Participation
    • Candidates must be enrolled in a school-sponsored music ensemble and/or class.
  • Academic Achievement
    • Candidates must have maintained for the previous semester at least an A average grade or equivalent in music, with at least a B average grade or equivalent in other academic subjects. Local chapters may make exceptions to these requirements at the discretion of the chapter advisor with school principal's approval.
  • Leadership
    • This criteria is at your discretion as Advisor. Generally speaking, any school or community activity that students are actively involved in will suffice. Leadership roles in both school and community may be considered as long as they can be verified.
  • Service
    • Similar to leadership, this criteria is at your discretion as Advisor. Service activities include any actions undertaken by the student that are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service.
  • Character
    • Judgment of character should be free of speculation and rumor. One description of character is a person who demonstrates respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Chapters are encouraged to take this model and modify it to meet their local needs.

Student Benefits

P.A.H.S.  is a program created to recognize outstanding artistry, community contributions, leadership through character development, and academic achievement in students studying colorguard in public and private schools, in 11th-12th education and performing arts organizations. These four pillars are the foundations of this organization.

Institutional Benefits

  1. Establishing a P.A.H.S. chapter allows you to recognize your outstanding students for their artistic merit, leadership, community involvement, and academic achievement. This helps create parity with other academic disciplines who sponsor honor societies.
  2. Your institution will be listed on the P.A.H.S. website on the FFCC page, allowing for additional promotion of your program.
  3. P.A.H.S. can serve as a recruitment tool, attracting students who are familiar with P.A.H.S. from other high school programs.

Benefit for the Colorguard Arts Education

By recognizing outstanding colorguard students statewide for their outstanding artistry, community contributions, leadership roles, and academic achievement it helps create a way to promote colorguard programs.

P.A.H.S. helps to advance the field of colorguard education centered in the arts.

Pageantry Arts Honor Society has a network of organizations that seek to unite and strengthen colorguard education in the United States and support the national office in reaching colorguard educators at the local and regional levels. This network supports individual and collective efforts of educators, artists, choreographers, administrators, researchers, and business owners working in colorguard in diverse artistic and educational environments across the country.
